Introduction

This WebQuest was developed for my EDIT 2020H class at the University of Georgia.

The lesson involves students, in groups of four, researching information about the culture of the Cherokee Indians who lived in North Georgia before their removal in 1838. Then, using the information they found, the students would work together to create the “Living” section for the Cherokee Phoenix, the newspaper of the Cherokee Nation.

Learners

This WebQuest is designed for a third grade class. It would be helpful to use in the study of Native Americans in Georgia. For this project, the students would need to know how to use the Internet and Microsoft Word (or some other word processor program). They should also probably have at least a basic introduction to studying Native Americans.

Curriculum Standards

The students will learn more in depth about the culture of the Cherokee Indians that lived in North Georgia.

Social Studies Standards Addressed

  • Examines the cultures of the American Indian nations found in Georgia including the Creeks and Cherokees.

This WebQuest also requires teamwork in the groups of students and allows them to use technology to gather information and to express the information they found through the writing process.

Technology Integration Standards Addressed

·          Utilizes technology tools to facilitate the writing process.

·          Uses basic research techniques with teacher guidance.
